Cape Chignecto Provincial Park

At the westernmost edge of the Cliffs of Fundy Geopark lies Nova Scotia’s largest provincial park. These ancient cliffs originate with the collision of continents, and now they split the Bay of Fundy in two.

Cape Chignecto Provincial Park

At Cape Chignecto, towering 180 m (600 ft.) granite cliffs rise from the Bay of Fundy, fully exposed to southwesterly storms. The cliffs here bear witness to the tectonic forces that once brought all continents together to form Pangea. Old continental rocks were folded and changed by heat and pressure. The Minas Fault Zone was created as continental blocks slid past each other. There were explosive eruptions of volcanoes, and their magma roots cooled to form granites. As a single supercontinent 300 million years ago, Nova Scotia and Morocco were once neighbours!  Cliffs of Fundy and Morocco’s M’Goun Geopark continue to celebrate this unique connection today.

The Park has 29 km (18 mi.) of pristine coastline, deep valleys, sheltered coves, rare plants, and remnant old-growth forests and features: hiking trails; beach access; scenic look offs; walk-in, back-country, group and kayak campsites; three cabins and a bunkhouse.

Directions: From Main Street in Parrsboro, drive north onto Upper Main Street past the Glooscap Restaurant. Take the next left onto Route 209 and continue down the shore to Advocate Harbour. Continue past Bayview Memorial Health Centre, and take the next left onto West Advocate Road. Continue to the parking area at the end of the road.
Directions (Eatonville): Follow the above directions. Continue on the 209 past West Advocate Road. Take the slight left into West Apple River on Apple River Road. After about 2 km, this road becomes dirt. Contine for another 10 km. Take the next right after Spicers Cove. After 1.5 km, you will arrive at the Eatonville Day Use Park
