Spencers Island

Once a bustling shipyard, a beach and scenic lighthouse overlook Spencers Island or Wowji’jk, a small basalt island.  In Mi’kmaq, Wowji’jk means “at the little pot” and refers to the shape of the island which resembles a flipped over cooking pot.  Traditionally, if you did not flip your cooking pot at the end of the season it would fill with water and debris, and it would decompose more quickly.

This site is where the famous mystery ship, Mary Celeste was built in 1861.  The two-masted brigantine was found adrift off the Azores, Portugal full of cargo and supplies but no one onboard…
