Winter Guided Hikes in the Cliffs of Fundy
Snow-covered forests, towering cliffs, and winter stargazing by the Bay of Fundy—this season’s guided hikes invite you to experience the Cliffs of Fundy in a whole new way.
Each year, the Cliffs of Fundy Geopark partners with Hike Nova Scotia to provide FREE guided hikes throughout the season in Sɨpekne'katik, where the Geopark is located. This winter, our first guided hike in January began with a gathering at the trailhead for Thomas Cove Coastal Reserve, a Cliffs of Fundy geosite in Keno'mi (Economy, NS).
Snow fell gently as we gathered to acknowledge that we were on the traditional and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq Nation (Sɨpekne'katik, Mi’kma’ki)and discussed how Hike Nova Scotia supports local organizations across the province. We also recognize the Mi’kmaw people’s connection to these lands and waters, whose stewardship and knowledge have shaped the landscapes we enjoy today. If you would like to learn more about the Mi’kmaq people and their enduring connection to this land, we invite you to visit the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre website.
From the parking lot, our 16 participants and three guides ventured into the woods beneath steadily falling snowflakes that blanketed the mossy forest floor. Along the way, we paused to explore the natural features around us, including mosses, lichens, bracket fungi, and the deciduous and coniferous trees that shape this coastal forest ecosystem.
As we emerged from the forest, spectacular views of the cliffs—those that give our Geopark its name—opened before us. Our geoscientist shared insights into the Triassic-age rocks found here, while participants enjoyed clear views of Tia'mue'katik (Moose Island) to the west and Eltaqnikejk, the “brick kiln,” just offshore.
If you missed our January hike, don’t worry—there are still two more hikes planned for the winter season, with additional guided experiences coming later this year.
Our next event is an easy 0.76 km nighttime walk (repeat the loop as many times as you like!) through the Glooscap Campground in Taqamiku'jk (Parrsboro, NS) on Sunday, February 15, 2026, at 6:30 PM. The evening will conclude with a campfire and stargazing as part of the Fundy Shore Winter Carnival.
We will also host a hike on March 14 at 1:00 PM just outside Atuomjek (Advocate Harbour, NS) in Cape Chignecto Provincial Park. This moderate-to-strenuous 3 km hike, conditions permitting, will travel from Red Rocks to the MacGahey Loop.
Although these events are free, registration is required.
